What is a Link?

What are Links?

A link is a section of text that can lead a user to another page on a particular website or a whole other site on the internet altogether. Links are an important part of successfully and easily navigating the internet for users.

While users need links to be able to move from page to page and site to site, they have other significance as well.

A link may often be referred to as a hyperlink. There is no true difference between the two; link is a word that is used to refer to hyperlink in short. It is usually not difficult to locate a link on a page. In most cases they are colored blue and underlined. If you move your mouse over a word or phrase and it allows you to click, that is another sign that it is a link.

Links are often disguised in text, but that does not mean that it is any more important. For example, if an article is referring to an article about links, it may say "for more information, visit www.linkexamplesite.com".

While there is nothing wrong with this, it is often more pleasing to the eye to "hide" a link behind text. For example, "for more information, visit our link information site." The words "link information" might be clickable links with the right html coding (a type of computer language used to make a website or website text appear a certain way), taking users to the very same site that the actual website address would have taken the user.

Links are an extremely important element of search engine marketing (SEM), which includes search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click advertising (PPC). Websites that have more links out there leading to them (from other related websites) are deemed to be more important and relevant, and have more authority (at the search engines) than those that have fewer links leading to their site.

If you think about it, it makes sense: in theory, users and site owners would only link to a site if they thought it was of good quality. For this reason, links are an important part of the internet experience and an even more important facet of SEO.

Links may sound pretty simple and basic, but there are many different types of links out there. The different types of links out there all have their specific purpose.

Reciprocal Links

Reciprocal links are links that are exchanged between webmasters. With reciprocal linking, one webmaster will place a link to a particular site on their own website in exchange for a link to their site being placed on that other site. This is an act that is mutually agreed upon between webmasters and typically doesn't involve the exchange of money.

One Way Links

One way links are another type of link, and an extremely important kind at that. These are links that are placed on a site without having to reciprocate, and this may be done with or without the initial knowledge of the person who owns the website that is being linked to. These are a common type of link that directs website users from one site to another site.

Purchased Text Links

Purchased text links are a less popular type of link, but an important one nonetheless. Quite obviously purchased text links are links that are paid for, but users can't tell that by looking at it. People will pay for links for a variety of reasons, whether they are looking to get traffic from a certain website or they are looking to increase their Google search engine ranking.

It is important to remember that Google does discourage the use of purchased text links for search engine ranking purposes.

This is because it can make their page rating system unfair, and so use of purchased text links for this reason is mostly strongly discouraged.

Authority Links

Authority links are another one of the more important types of links out there. Just as their name indicates, these links to (or from) websites that are usually already very highly rated by Google and other search engines. It is an honor to get an authority link in the Internet world, and it is a great tool for search engine optimization.

Those websites that consistently receive authority links are bound to have much more success than those that do not.

Directory Links

Directory links are links that come from either online directories or via articles in article directories around the web.

These are links that you can get for yourself by submitting articles to directories. While they do have some importance, directory links are not nearly as important as many site owners and some select search engine optimization specialists would like to think.

At the same time, they are part of a well-rounded linking plan and should be used sparingly as a way of generating traffic, authority, and better rankings with the search engines.

Links are an important part of being able to successfully navigate the internet with ease. They are also an important part of search engine optimization. Knowing what links are and understanding the different kinds is one of the most important steps in being able to properly position your website for the search engines.
