What is an eBook?

What are ebooks?

The term eBook literally means an "electronic" book. While a typical book has pages typically made of paper, an eBook is digitally created and not actually published in a bound manner.

Instead, an ebook is downloaded via a computer and then read through various mediums, such as a home computer, a laptop, or a device called an ebook reader, which is designed specifically for eBook reading.

Reading an eBook is much like reading a document on your word processor. However, eBooks also can be in full illustrated color.

Why would someone want to use eBooks?

Some of the big benefits of eBooks are accessibility, affordability, and convenience.

For some, eBook technology has given them an affordable medium to publish their short stories, their how-to books, informative reports that will help someone be informed of or address specific problems, and even full length novels.

This eBook technology has created even greater access to the information age than ever before!

Because there is no need for eBook publishers to stock books, an eBook is naturally going to be more cost effective for both the publisher and the consumer.

Additionally, when a consumer purchases an eBook, they have instant access to their purchase – no need to wait for or even PAY FOR shipping.

The book comes in its entirety in electronic format, which means it won't be filling up valuable space on your bookshelf!

While eBooks will certainly never completely replace bound books, they are certainly finding a huge place in the publishing world. There are already eBook clubs popping up all over!

When considering transportability, because the eBook is conveniently stored on your laptop or in your eBook reader, you can carry multiple books without the bulk involved in carrying numerous traditional books.

Other Potential Benefits of eBooks

To consider the major potential in eBooks, think of the day when all textbooks come in eBook format. A student will no longer have to carry huge, cumbersome backpacks full of textbooks. Instead, they will be able to carry a simple eBook reader.

Also, think of the potential applications for lawyers, doctors, salesmen, publishers, and more! The possibilities are mind blowing!

It is pretty amazing that twenty short years ago, this is something you would only have seen on Star Trek. I can't wait for the food replicator technology to finally be realized!
